Terms of Service

1. What the Service is

Make It Even is an expense-sharing and record-keeping tool. It helps you and the people you share expenses with track who paid for what, how costs are split, and the resulting balances — including across currencies, using exchange rates recorded on the date of each expense.

We are not a bank, money transmitter, payment processor, or financial advisor. The Service records and calculates balances; it does not move money. Any actual payment between you and another person happens outside the Service through whatever method you choose. You are solely responsible for the accuracy of the expenses you enter and for settling balances with others.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account. Notify us promptly at support@makeiteven.com if you suspect unauthorized use. You may sign in with an email and password or with Google; you are responsible for maintaining access to those credentials.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the Service for any unlawful, fraudulent, or abusive purpose;
• upload content you don't have the right to share, or that is malicious, infringing, or unlawful;
• attempt to access accounts, data, or systems that aren't yours, or probe, scan, or test the security of the Service without authorization;
• interfere with or disrupt the Service, or circumvent rate limits, usage caps, or access controls;
• scrape, resell, or build a competing service from the Service or its data.

4. Your content

You retain ownership of the expense data, descriptions, images (including receipt photos), and other content you submit ("Your Content"). You grant us a limited license to store, process, and display Your Content solely to operate and improve the Service — including processing receipt images through our AI provider to extract expense details when you use that feature. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to share any content, including the personal information of others (for example, the name or email of a friend you add to a group).

5. Subscriptions, billing, and refunds

The Service offers a Free tier and a paid "Pro" subscription. Pro is billed through our payment processor, Stripe, on a monthly or annual basis as selected at checkout, and renews automatically until cancelled. Paid plans may begin with a free trial; if you do not cancel before the trial ends, you will be charged for the first period.

You can cancel any time from your account's billing settings or the Stripe customer portal. Cancellation stops future renewals; your Pro features remain active until the end of the period you've already paid for. Except where required by law, payments are non-refundable. Prices may change with notice; changes apply to renewals after the notice. Any referral discounts apply as described at the time they are earned and may be limited or withdrawn if obtained through abuse.

6. Free-tier limits and changes to the Service

Some features and capacity limits depend on your plan. We may add, change, or remove features, and we may adjust Free-tier limits, with reasonable notice where practical. We may also impose rate limits to protect the Service.

7. Third-party services

The Service relies on third parties including Stripe (payments), Google (optional sign-in), and AI and infrastructure providers used to deliver features such as receipt scanning, email, and hosting. Your use of those features is also subject to those providers' terms. We are not responsible for third-party services.

8. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from your account settings. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or use the Service in a way that risks harm to others or to the Service. Some records may be retained as described in our Privacy Policy and as required to preserve the integrity of shared balances for other group members.

9. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that balance calculations, exchange rates, or AI-extracted receipt data are error-free; you are responsible for reviewing them. Use of the Service is at your own risk.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or USD $50.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
